About Us
September 05, 2010. Levels Of Living

Since Knollwood opened its doors in 1962, it has expanded to become a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) with the addition of assisted living in 1993 and dementia care in 2008. This continuum of care includes: independent living (the Hall); assisted living (the Terrace); skilled nursing care (the Health Services Center); and dementia care (the Special Care Center). Direct admission to the assisted living and skilled nursing communities is permitted but is rare as current residents have priority on vacancies.

Independent Living
The Hall: Most Knollwood residents reside in the independent living apartments, which range from efficiencies (from 350 sq. ft.) to spacious two bedrooms with den (up to 2,700 sq. ft.). Here, about 200 residents share the comfort and camaraderie of living among people with similar military backgrounds without the concern of home maintenance, cleaning, meal preparation or safety.

Independent residents enjoy a relaxed and carefree lifestyle without the hassles of home ownership. Knollwood offers the luxuries of being in an apartment-style building while allowing freedom from the mundane chores of cooking, cleaning, and yard work. Our residents can travel the world with the peace of mind that their homes are secure. Residents enjoy living in elegant apartments while basic safety features ensure their well-being. Most apartments feature:

  • Fully Equipped Kitchens with Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Electric Oven with Range and Garbage Disposal
  • Attractive Washed Oak Cabinets with Ample Storage
  • Washer and Dryer
  • Large Picture Windows
  • Spacious Walk-in, Cedar-Lined Closets

Assisted Living
The Terrace: Knollwood’s assisted living community includes 42 private apartments where residents requiring assistance with meals, medication management, dressing, grooming, and/or bathing are assisted by a staff of licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants. Our care is intended to meet an individual’s needs, while supporting their continuing independence.

We encourage our residents to be as independent as possible. Our assisted living program helps with many chores some may find too consuming or exhausting. The Terrace, our assisted living community, encourages health and wellbeing through socialization and assistance with tasks that have become more difficult. Residents are motivated, challenged, engaged with social programs and recreational activities.
Our trained staff provides personal attention and assistance with all activities of daily living such as:

  • Medication Management

All 35 beds are licensed and Medicare- and Medicaid-certified. This total-care community caters to those residents who need 24-hour care but do not benefit from cognitive therapies offered in the Special Care Center, either because they do not suffer from dementia or their physical and cognitive care needs are very advanced.

The Health Services Center is available to residents on a temporary basis to recover from a short-term illness or injury, as well as long-term care. There is a registered nurse on duty at all times, with a full staff of nurses and certified nursing assistants.

Memory Care

Special Care Center (SCC): The Special Care Center opened in June 2008 to provide individuals with dedicated dementia care, giving each resident a safe, adaptive environment that meets the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of memory impairments. Our program provides a flexible, person-centered approach, designed specifically to benefit residents who are between the moderate to moderately severe stages of dementia (stages 4 through 6 as described by the Alzheimer's Association at http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_stages_of_alzheimers.asp).

The therapeutic recreation and care provided in the Special Care Center encourage meaningful interactions and promote much-needed sensory stimulation through an array of activities, such as music and arts therapies, reminiscence groups and aromatherapy sessions. Like the Health Services Center, the Special Care Center is licensed as a skilled nursing facility, and all 25 beds are Medicare- and Medicaid-certified. However, the Special Care Center programming is designed to engage higher-functioning residents with memory impairments who are able to participate and benefit from the cognitive therapies offered.

SCC services and amenities include the following:

  • 24-hour licensed nursing supervision supported by certified, professional staff, all specially trained in dementia care
  • Personalized care plans with input from resident, family, staff, caregivers and others, as appropriate
  • Choice of meal plans -- traditional 3-meal-a-day and unique 5-meal-a-day programs offered, depending on resident desires and needs, evaluated and overseen by a registered dietician
  • Monitoring devices and unapparent, secure exits prevent dangerous exploring by wandering residents
  • Daily therapeutic activity programs to engage residents and stimulate senses
  • Full assistance with personal care, including toileting, dressing, grooming, feeding and other individual needs
  • Spa-like whirlpool baths provided twice a week where heat lamps, calming lighting and other special touches encourage relaxation
  • Coordination and scheduling of professional medical services

  • Large-print calendars with activity schedules and locations posted in each room and in common areas
  • Homelike rooms with private bathrooms furnished with electric bed, bedside stand, window seat, ample storage, and a memory shadow box
